Peter Eriksson; (2) ADH2 polymorphism and flushing in Asian populations, by Wei J. Chen, C. C. Chen, J. M. Ju, and Andrew T. A. Cheng; (3) Role of ADH3 genotypes in the acute effects of alcohol in a Finnish population, by Hidetaka Yamamoto, Kathrin Kohlenberg-Müller, and C. J. Peter Eriksson; (4) Clinical characteristics and disease course of alcoholics with different ADH2 genotypes, by Mitsuru Kimura, Masanobu Murayama, Sachio Matsushita, Haruo Kashima, and Susumu Higuchi; (5) ADH2 polymorphism, alcohol drinking, and birth defects, by Lucinda Carr, D. Viljoen, L. Brooke, T. Stewart, T. Foroud, J. Su, and Ting-Kai Li; and (6) ADH genotypes and alcohol use in Europeans, by John B. Whitfield.

Improved methods for genotype determination of human alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) at ADH 2 and ADH 3 loci by using polymerase chain reaction-directed mutagenesis.

The human gene for producing alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH; EC 1.1.1.1) is polymorphic at ADH 2 and ADH 3 loci. Until now, the study of this polymorphism required liver biopsy or allele-specific radioactive probes. We have used directed mutagenesis by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to amplify and analyze the genotype of ADH 2 and ADH 3 loci. Thus, we could determine easily and unambiguously t...

Title: Retinoic acid formation from retinol in the human gastric mucosa: role of Class IV alcohol dehydrogenase and its relevance to morphological changes Running head: Retinoic acid formation in the human stomach

Alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) participates in the formation of retinoic acid from retinol in various organs including the gastric mucosa. However, its clinical significance still remains to be clarified. In this study, we identified the ADH isoforms responsible for the retinoic acid formation among various ADH isoforms, and examined associations among the ADH activities, the retinoic acid formati...

Clinical Relevance of Cytokines Gene Polymorphisms and Protein Levels in Gingival Cervical Fluid from Chronic Periodontitis Patients

Background: Cytokines are suggested to play a role in periodontitis. Objective: To determine and compare the levels of Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) and Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) samples amongst healthy individuals and  those with chronic periodontitis. Further to compare the GCF cytokine levels in three genotype classes defined by the respective gene p...

Inferring the evolutionary histories of the Adh and Adh-dup loci in Drosophila melanogaster from patterns of polymorphism and divergence.

The DNA sequences of 11 Drosophila melanogaster lines are compared across three contiguous regions, the Adh and Adh-dup loci and a noncoding 5' flanking region of Adh. Ninety-eight of approximately 4750 sites are segregating in the sample, 36 in the 5' flanking region, 38 in Adh and 24 in Adh-dup. Several methods are presented to test whether the patterns and levels of polymorphism are consiste...

Molecular population genetics of an electrophoretically monomorphic protein in the alcohol dehydrogenase region of Drosophila pseudoobscura.

Nucleotide sequence data from the alcohol dehydrogenase (Adh) region of 18 isochromosomal strains of Drosophila pseudoobscura were used to determine whether the lack of amino acid polymorphism in ADH results from a low neutral mutation rate or a recent directional selection event. We estimated the neutral mutation parameter, 4Nmu, in synonymous sites for 17 subregions of Adh. The nucleotide div...
